SUGAGUMI

While walking around the streets of Nio and feeling the atmosphere, the two spoke about their various ideas on building houses. Sanuki is a place where you can create your own “source” with its scenery. This might be a good opportunity to reexamine the concept of architecture and what the meaning behind building at this location is at Sanuki Ryokusou.

“Creating Sanuki scenery” is what we have valued most throughout our long history. We believe that a piece of architecture is not complete by itself but in harmony with the surrounding landscape. In Sanuki, its rich nature and nostalgic landscape such as Chichibugahama Beach span the land. Indispensable to that harmony are natural and traditional materials that do not burden the surrounding environment. For example, if tree wood from Kagawa Prefecture is used to build a Sanuki house, it becomes a part of that house and will adapt to the climate is it firmly takes root in the land. For houses, we sometimes go felling with our customers for the tree that will become the new house’s pillar. We love using old wood to build new houses, giving a new connection to the trees that have concluded their original role. We, who build the houses, and our customers, who live in those houses, truly value architecture that blends in with the trees.
Besides this, we create architecture that fits into the landscape with Yakisugi roasted cedar, stucco and tiles, all returning to nature. Incorporating traditional materials from the Sanuki region, making designs that use nature’s blessings such as light and wind, and incorporating carefully inherited traditional carpenter skills are what we do best.

Creating architecture is creating a landscape. We will continue creating architecture that fits closely with nature and the Sanuki atmosphere.
